Event Details:

Red Dress Day (formally known as the National Day for Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited People) started in 2010 by Metis artist Jaime Black in Winnipeg to bring awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people who have gone missing or have been murdered (at a rate significantly higher than non-Indigenous women). Her goal with the art installation was to confront people with the violence that women have and are still experiencing, and to create a space for women to tell their stories.

Join us for a Commemoration Service in St. Marys hosted by Kaswentha - Two Row Now (an Indigenous-led group focused on sharing knowledge and building community across Huron-Perth).

All are welcome

5:00pm

Meet at front steps of St. Marys Public Library (15 Church St N) and start solidarity walk down Queen Street to Riverwalk Commons (84 Water Street S)

6:00pm

Sacred Fire, Singing and Drumming (with Patsy-Ann Day and Melissa Stevens)

"We say the spirits that have passed see bright colours best, red in particular.

So hanging red dresses helps lost spirits find their way home to loved ones"

Lisa Campbell, University of Regina.
